I am very pleased to share with everyone that a check has been delivered to Haralson County Middle School from the Haralson County Gifted Association to sponsor Mr. Young's attendance at the National Association for Gifted Children Convention (http://www.nagc.org/2010convention.aspx) being held in Atlanta on November 11-14th. This will directly benefit our gifted students and our schools as this convention will bring the latest research and teaching techniques by the leading experts in the gifted education field! So, a very big
"Thank You" to all our members who participated in the 2 fundraisers held so far this year, and also "Thank You" to Mr. Young for representing Haralson County Schools and the Gifted Program at the convention!!

Our goal was to raise enough funds to send 2 teachers to the convention. We have met one of those goals, but will still need to raise some additional funds for our 2nd teacher. There is still a considerable amount of bottled water and kool-aid jammers left from our previous fundraisers, and we will probably set up a table at the City Wide Yard Sale the 1st weekend in October. The bake sale at Waco Fest was successful and we are considering asking for cake, cookie, brownie etc... donations again to sell at the City Wide Yard Sale. All of the whole cakes sold- as did the mini cakes, banana bread loaves, and platters of brownies. We also sold quiet a bit of the individual servings, but may only sell cookies individually next time, and then whole cakes etc. Everyone please let me know your thoughts on this, and indicate if you may be able to contribute/participate.

We have gained our membership needed to renew our charter! We are very pleased with the continued interest and support, and wish to remind everyone that we will be sending in our renewal at the end of September, so if you are intending to submit your annual membership dues, please try to have that in the mail before the end of the month (to make it easier on our treasurer and secretary). The application may be printed here (http://www.oomphind.com/GAGC/membership_app_gagc.pdf).

Our next quarterly meeting will be on Monday November 15th. Please mark your calendars now! It will be at 6:30 at the Georgia Power Bldg in Tallapoosa. As always, our gifted kids are encouraged to attend. There will be activities and snacks provided.

Haralson County Gifted Association

Haralson County Gifted Association is holding a bake sale to raise the rest of the funds needed to send 2 teachers to the National Convention in Atlanta this November. We need all our friends to come support us- come see us and buy a whole cake or a slice of cake!

We need volunteers to help bake and sell baked goods at a vendor booth at Waco Fest. We will be selling both individual servings (pound cake, brownies, cookies- in a ...ziploc bag) and whole cakes, and also bottled water, lemonade and any other beverages donated.

Great news from HCMS! Mr. Ridley has approved HCGA's sponsorship of Mr. Young to attend the National Association for Gifted Children annual convention! (http://www.nagc.org/2010convention.aspx) This is such a great opportunity for Haralson County School's Gifted Program, and I am extremely pleased that some of our teachers will be able to attend! In addition, Mr. Ridley has expressed interest in our local affiliation, and in such supports our efforts! This is one of our goals for this current year- to reach the middle and high school levels- and, in addition, provides parent involvement at all the schools in Haralson County.

Other goals for this year are to continue to fill committees to further the mission of HCGA. If you have a specific area of talent or interest that will benefit the Gifted Program, we would love to hear from you. We would like to continue efforts to apply for grants, and to seek out potential scholarships for gifted students (rather for a summer camp, or for college!), promote an awareness within the community at large of the unique needs and challenges of gifted students, plan opportunities that will enable gifted students to socialize with their peers, plan and implement fundraiser events....etc.

This years officers are: Rhonda Prather (chair); Susan Nason (vice-chair); Beth Newman (secretary); Laura Henckle (treasurer). Contributing to the bake sale at this point are: Angela Thompson, Susan Secord, Christie Fisher, Susan Nason, Laura Henckle, and Rhonda Prather. Thank you all for your continued support of HCGA.

We are in the process of completing our charter for this school year. If you are planning to become a member, please contact one of the officers above for an application, or you may access the application at (http://www.oomphind.com/GAGC/membership_app_gagc.pdf). We need to have all applications and dues before the 1st of October. You may mail your application to:

Haralson County Gifted Association
PO Box 865
Tallapoosa, GA 30176

  • Please make checks payable to Rhonda Prather. Receipts will be mailed to the address provided on your application. Your dues include you membership in HCGA and Georgia Association for Gifted Children (GAGC) and is at a discount rate of $20.

Dear Parents,

Our main focus at this last meeting was fundraisers to help send two teachers to the National Association for Gifted Children Convention in Atlanta on November 14th. We need to raise $1500 for two teachers. This would be an awesome experience for our teachers. At the convention they will be able to learn new methods and ideas, find out about new technologies and aids, and network with leaders in the gifted education field and other instructors from around the country. It's a great way to boost motivation and get more ideas flowing into the classroom. We can't help but be excited the convention is being held in-state this year!

During the gifted students' summer camp at HCMS, June 1-4, we will be holding two fundraisers. The first will need volunteers to accept donations during the morning drop-off and/or afternoon pick-up. We need volunteers to be able to be there at 7:30 am or 12:30 pm.

The second fundraiser will during the camp hours. We will be selling snacks and drinks during snack time for a small fee. Again, we would really appreciate some extra volunteers. We already have members looking into having the drinks and snacks donated, but any additional information would be wonderful.

Most of us will be picking up/dropping off our children anyway, so arriving a little early one day in the morning or afternoon to help out would mean so much. I hate to continue to rely on just a few parents.

Additionally, on June 14th we will be holding a planning meeting for a spaghetti dinner tentatively set for the first Friday of the school year. We thought it would be a good idea for that week, as we could have prepared dinners for hectic parents and families to pick-up as well as sit down to. But we need people. We need planning.

We will need
  • everyone's help to sell tickets
  • volunteers to cook
  • volunteers to serve
  • volunteers to clean-up
  • donated food and drinks
  • a place to hold the event
You are welcome to volunteer in more than one area, and it would be great to have the kids be some of the volunteers!

I can't stress enough how much participation is needed to get these events off the ground. We have already achieved some of our small goals this year. We can't reach the bigger ones if we don't grow. Please take a minute to reply to this email, and let us know we can count on you. The more work we can divide, the less work it is on any one individual.

Thank you,

Haralson County Gifted Association

Dear Parents,

Discussions were held on the following topics:

  • Rhonda Prather reported back on the GAGC convention -

A Brief Summary of the Convention Topics: Our keynote speaker was Dr. Sally Krisel, a long time gifted educator/advocator/adminstrator. She is currently serving as the Gifted Coordinator for Hall County, and she delivered her message on integrating technology into the classroom. Along with Dr. Krisel, were three gifted educators from Hall County- one from each level (elementary, middle school, high school).
From the elementary level was Cathy Dial (also the teacher of the year recipient) who presented how Hall County has implemented the Renzulli Learning Program in every classroom and how the program allows for differentiation in curriculum for each child, as well as saving precious school funds.
From the middle school level was Kelly Schollaert who presented on the Da Vinci Academy offered to 123 gifted middle school students. In the program, all lessons are derived from internet based programs alleviating the costs of text books, in particular, the use of a free curriculum offered by the History Channel. The students in the program also participate in the History Channel competition, and Hall County has 3 students going to the National Competition.
The last presenter was Jennifer Kellingsworth, who discussed the High School Honors Mentorship Program as an academic elective, and areas of participation in Hall County, including medicine and law. She covered the use of technology for communication with her students, including text messaging and Facebook.
Of course there is much much more to share, including email address and phone numbers for the presenters should anyone want more expert information.

  • The National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) will be holding its annual convention in Atlanta, GA Nov. 11-14 at the Georgia Dome. They are looking for volunteers to help, and, if you think you can, please reply to this email or call Rhonda Prather @770-827-9477 for more information. We would like to see if we can sponsor one, if not two, Gifted Education teachers for the conference. If you would like to help raise funds for this, or can partly sponsor a teacher, again, please contact us.
  • We again discussed the possibility of having a summer camp, as referred to at the previous meeting. Devin Prather gave an excellent PowerPoint presentation of how the SimCity 4 software works. More information needs to be gathered, and we need to get a sense of how many children would be interested in participating. We would like this to be interesting to a variety of age groups. We are asking for feedback. Please take a moment to reply and let us know if this is of interest to you and your children.
  • The possibility of chartering a chess club was brought up. It could be a good idea for bringing the children together, developing their minds and reaching out to the community through competition.
Make sure to fill out your census forms and the survey from the Haralson County Chamber of Commerce. These are great ways to help influence the future of our community and funding for our education.

Next meeting will be held on Monday, April 19 @ 6:30 pm in the Georgia Power conference room in Tallapoosa. If you would like something to be included on next month's agenda, please reply to this email with "Agenda" as subject.

Thank you,

Haralson County Gifted Association
