Dear Parents,
The Haralson County Gifted Association met on Dec. 21st to discuss the rumor about the gifted program's possible change to a cluster grouping rather than a resource model. We would like to reiterate that this is just a rumor, and Susan Secord has stated that this is not happening. But, because we have had several parents approach us about this, who do have strong feelings on the subject, we wanted to gauge the opinion of other parents with children in the Haralson County gifted program. We came to the decision to poll parents through a postcard mailer. These postcards will have postage already attached and will be a simple way to not only ask parents their opinion, but inform more people about our advocacy group. They should be handed out to students in the next day or two, so look for them in your child's backpack. There is ample space provided to also place any comments you have on the subject or to raise our awareness about any other issue.
Rhonda Prather has also found some programs she is going to bring to the attention of the middle school. The first is the Future City competition, which is a really neat opportunity to create and build a working city model. It would require $25, one teacher sponsor, one engineer mentor, and three 7th-8th grade students. If anyone is any engineer and would like to volunteer their time as a mentor, please let us know!
The second program is Mathcounts, a national enrichment, club and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory. This is a completely free program and would love to see it, as well as Future City take off. To find out more information about these programs, click on the links provided or email us.
We have been officially welcomed to the Georgia Association for Gifted Children and, those who are paid members, will soon be receiving the emails and newsletters they provide. We are very enthusiastic about having both state and national support, and would like to see our membership numbers grow. Our next step is incorporate and gain non-profit status; both are goals we hope to achieve in 2010.
We will be meeting the third Monday of each month at 6:30pm at the Georgia Power Building off of 78 in Tallapoosa. This month the meeting falls on Jan. 18, and, as always, we will be providing snacks and drinks and entertainment for kids. If you can help by bringing some supplies, please let us know.
Thanks,
Haralson County Gifted Association
