02/15/2010 Meeting Notes

Dear Parents,

Discussions were held on the following topics:

  • Results received so far from the poll concerning cluster grouping vs. resource class delivery methods
  • Initiation of the MathCounts program at Haralson County Middle School
  • Possible Summer Camp activity to be organized by HCGA
  • Upcoming Georgia Association of Gifted Children conference
Results continue to come in from our postcard poll. All were decidedly against cluster grouping so far. Again, we continue to stress that this is not something that the Haralson County School System is putting in place.

We have had contact from several new persons in the past month showing interest in becoming a member with the Haralson County Gifted Association (HCGA). We are proud to have these new participants, and continue to welcome anyone with an interest in advocating for the needs of gifted children.

The MathCounts program is a popular program idea with the middle school and they hope to implement it in the coming months, as well as organize to be able to participate in the Future City competition next year.

The idea of a city project/summer program we can organize ourselves was discussed. Our initial idea is to have kids design and create a Tallapoosa of the past and possibly the future (depending on participation levels) on both computer and in model form. The thought is that we can involve research, creativity, and computer skills for several age groups on this project. It could be an good opportunity,as well, to involve several of our area citizens and historical societies to tell the kids about how a city is managed, how it has grown, and what it hopes to become. Basic materials would be provided for the model and we are looking into internet use and software programs.

If this is a success, we could move on to other towns and areas in the future. We thought it was a great way to spark minds, promote relationships and spread community involvement. Our tentative cost per attendee would be $5 and we are also looking into providing lunch or snacks. This is in the very beginning stages of development and all opinions and advice are welcome. If anyone would like to volunteer to be involved on the committee to help get this off the ground, please let us know. This will be on the agenda for the next meeting.

The Haralson County School Survey is up and active until Friday, February 26. We encourage everyone to fill it out, as it concerns both the alternative school calendars as well as other cost cutting measures the school system will have to take in the next year.

The annual conference of the Georgia Association of Gifted Children (GAGC) will be held on Friday March 12, 2009 at various locations within the state. The deadline to register is February 26th. Registration fees are $75 for members, and $105 for non members. (Remember, your membership in our local chapter includes your membership with GAGC). The closest location for our area is Rome, but there are different topics being covered at each site. For more information, you may request from HCGA, or visit the website at www.GAGC.org.

Ms. Huckeba is still looking for volunteers for the lollipop sales at WHES during lunch time. Please reply to this email to set up a time, or call Rhonda Prather @770-827-9477.

Next meeting will be held on Monday, March 15 @ 6:30 pm in the Georgia Power conference room in Tallapoosa.

If you would like something to be included on next months agenda, please reply to this email with "Agenda" as subject.

Thank you,

Haralson County Gifted Association
